Building Trust in an Unbelieving Community

Camolate, Mexico – Marcos and his wife Carmen were shocked when several kind strangers rallied the community together to build them a new kitchen – one they and their four children desperately needed.

Before this kitchen project began, a man named Elpido decided that he wanted to plant a church in his unbelieving community in Camolate, Mexico. Elpido is a believer in Jesus who deeply desired to share the gospel with his neighbors. However, he knew he needed to build trust before planting a church, so he began looking for opportunities.

After meeting with Abelardo, a National Ministry Leader in Mexico, Elpido knew he wanted to do a building project through HOPE Coffee in order to meet needs and build trust in Camolate. He soon discovered that Marcos, his wife Carmen, and their four children did not have a safe, usable kitchen. God revealed the first step in building trust with these families!

Before the project began, Elpido gathered several volunteers from the community who also did not know Jesus. He knew that involving members of the community in the project would create opportunities for gospel conversations. Over the next few months, Elpido, a few of his believing friends, and the community volunteers worked hard to build this new kitchen.

Through these faithful efforts, a foundation of trust was being built right alongside the kitchen. Once the project was completed, Elpido asked Marcos and Carmen how they felt about their new kitchen. They told Elpido that in the beginning, they believed it was too good to be true. Now that it was finished, they were amazed by the love Elpido showed them! With joy, Elpido told them that this kitchen represents God’s unfathomable love for them and that they should thank Him alone.

Though Marcos and Carmen have not trusted Christ yet, this building project created opportunities to talk about Jesus. Elpido became friends with many in the community and plans to do additional projects in the future to continue to build trust and eventually plant a church.

Please pray for Elpido as he cares for the Camolate community and for Marcos and Carmen’s family and neighbors to trust in Jesus for salvation!

Baby Zawadi, who lost her mother at birth, is thriving under the care of her grandmother. After the death of her mother, Zawadi received formula and her grandmother received vital support from the Kinsley Blake Hanner Health Post at Rwanda Children – one of the many clinics supported through CompassionTea.

The Fight Against Malnutrition Program, which includes providing infant formula, is a vital resource for children in Rwanda. Families are eligible for this program if they have more than one child born at the same time, a mother with health issues, or families without the means to work.

6 New Believers in Honduras

Pacayal, Honduras – Two pastors of the church Dios es Amor (“God is Love”) had it on their hearts to bring the Good News to Pacayal, a small, poverty-stricken community in rural Honduras. While making plans to visit the community, they received a call from HOPE Coffee National Ministry Leader, Pastor Carlos Ramos. Pastor Carlos called to ask one question—would they be interested in partnering with HOPE Coffee to bring the gospel message to Pacayal?

The pastors from Dios es Amor were stunned. Only God could have orchestrated this. The three pastors, knowing God was at work, began to work out a plan. On a Sunday last month, they took the trip out to Pacayal, eager to see what God had in store.

They didn’t arrive empty-handed. They brought enough groceries to feed thirty families, a gift that was much needed by many of the families in Pacayal. But inarguably, the most precious gift they delivered was the message of salvation.

God indeed had good plans that day. After the pastors passed out the food and shared the gospel message, six people decided to follow Jesus!

Please praise God with us for our new brothers and sisters in Christ: Otonial, Angel, Benito, Waldina, Obedindo, and Lester. And for a God who has good plans in store and uses pastors, prayers, and a simple cup of coffee to bring many to salvation.

Meet Job and Adria.

Job Gámez lives with his wife and two young kids on their 12-acre coffee farm just 5 miles outside of Siguatepeque, Honduras. He and his wife Adria have backgrounds in horticulture and forestry engineering which make them excellent coffee farmers. But what’s even more unique is how they show their pickers and neighboring farmers the love of Christ.

There are many harsh realities that coffee farmers face in Honduras, but being a coffee picker can be especially brutal. The Gámez’s have set out to run their farm differently by providing each of their pickers with three life–changing opportunities:

Job and Adria provide each coffee picker they hire with a laying hen which not only provides food for their families but also provides a chance for more income when they can sell the leftover eggs.
The children of the coffee pickers each receive a backpack full of school supplies without which they would not be able to attend school.
Each picker receives a water system so their families have safe and clean drinking water.

Before Job began selling his beans to HOPE Coffee, he had no choice but to sell his beans to a middleman for half what they were worth. After making a connection with HOPE Coffee, he receives a higher-than-fair-trade rate which is absolutely unheard of in his area. Moreover, as Christians, Job and Adria feel supported by their brothers and sisters in Christ at HOPE Coffee. They know the HOPE Coffee Team and Partners are praying for them and that we are walking alongside them.

Eight High School Graduates

Joconal, Guatemala—Before Lan Vwa started in rural Guatemala, none of the children who resided there would have dreamed of an education past the sixth grade or having a career of their choosing. And before 2012, it would have been even more astonishing for a young girl to dream of such things.

This year’s graduation ceremony felt significant to Karina Leiva, the director of Lav Vwa, who oversees two Christian schools for the children of coffee farmers. She witnessed eight seniors graduate from high school, which is truly unheard of in this area of Guatemala. Even more shockingly, seven of the graduates were young women! To see all of these young people break the cycle of poverty through education is a miracle.

Among the graduates is Yerlin who wants to further her studies and become a gynecologist. She has seen the need around Joconal and the surrounding communities and feels God is calling her to help. She even earned a scholarship to a university. Yerlin would have never even thought about anything other than going into coffee farming with her family before Lan Vwa.

New Home and New Hope for a Family in Honduras

In a small village of rural Honduras, Heberto and his son, Will, lived in a home that was little more than four walls. With no floor, roof, or windows, their living conditions were dire, offering minimal protection from the elements that surrounded them.

Heberto and Will’s condition came to the attention of Pastor Lenin, a local pastor who regularly visited their village. Moved by their circumstances, Pastor Lenin decided to take action and partner with HOPE Coffee to provide the family with the basic necessities that every human being deserves: a solid roof over their heads, a proper floor to stand on, and windows to let in the light.

As Pastor Lenin and his congregation planned the work to provide the physical shelter, they also shared the love of Jesus. However, the father and son seemed unresponsive to the teachings. It was at that time when tragedy struck.

Heberto faced a near-death experience that shook him to his core when part of the original walls of his home fell in on him. Overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty, he turned to the one place where he had found solace and compassion: Pastor Lenin’s church. After rushing to the church to find comfort, Heberto confided in Pastor Lenin that he felt God calling him there.

Please pray with all of us at HOPE Coffee, as well as with Pastor Lenin and his congregation, that Heberto’s heart would turn completely towards Jesus. Pray also that his son Will would turn away from a life of sin and that God would soften his heart to the gospel message.
